tornado warning
For the first time in quite a while, a tornado warning was in effect for Waterloo. I'm used to them back toward Sarnia way, but around here they're much more rare. CBC has effectively a stub article (damn strike/lockout/whatever they call what they're doing) about its effect in the Toronto area.

Today's also the last day of work, which is good and bad. Bad because it means no (or, if I find work, reduced) pay cheques in the fall while I'm in school, and because it's likely to be the last term I work as a tutor. Good because I don't have to worry about dealing with student complaints any more (a very unenjoyable part of the job).

For puerly good news, Kim and I will have a fun day tomorrow. We will be hanging out with [info]doooook for a chunk of the day, and we'll also finally be meeting [info]irresistiblyred (exciting!).

A tornado warning? When was the last time there was a tornado?

Have fun tomorrow.

It depends on what geographical location you're talking about, but no matter what your answer is, I still don't know.

Thanks!

Now warning means it's actually coming, right, and a watch means hey you might possibly get one, eh?

We had a tornado last year. They had to send meterologists up from I think Burlington VT or Buffalo NY to measure the damage and stuff to decide whether or not a twister had actaully landed.

Yup, you have the distinction between warning and watch. They issued the warning as soon as somebody actually saw a tornado.

Wouldn't it be pretty obvious if a twister had landed?

One would think so, but they had to study this for a week. And then they decided, yes, one had landed.

Some comments to help you out:

1. a WARNING means that the hazardous weather condition is guaranteed to happen or is already underway.
2. a WATCH means it could, might or maybe happen but not for sure.
3. It's a Lockout at CBC. The staff are being prevented from going to work in order for the company to stop paying the payroll so the CBC can fund the production of a couple of blockbuster movies with that money instead. Wouldn't life be interesting if the city stopped paying firemen for a few weeks so they could buy some snazzy paint for all the streetlights?

Yeah, it should be straightforward, the warning/watch thing but I have a simple brain.

Isn't the CBC owned by the government?

our firemen are volunteers but I see your point

All of your firemen are volunteers?

In my town and the surrounding towns yes. Only the bigger cities, like Syracuse or maybe Plattsburgh have paid firefighters.
